The dial divides the conservatory night into twelve quiet intervals, beginning when the last skylight turns grey. Watchers remain behind the western screen and record the first nose, paw, and full-body appearance separately. A confirmed visit requires the animal to cross the narrow tile between two orchid beds. Notes include the dial interval, direction of travel, and whether condensation obscures the coloured glass.

Footprints are measured the following morning without following them beyond the outer bed.
